Posted in UPCOMING EVENTS

“Romancing Beethoven” is the recital which is going to be held at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina on Wednesday 25th of April at 7:30pm.  Wholly dedicated to the works of the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, the recital is going to feature the iconic music of Beethoven by the leading string quartet Cordia.
Ludwig van Beethoven, born in Bonn in 1770, is one of Germany’s most famous composers.  He was a crucial figure in the transition between Classical and Romantic eras in music and he remains one of the most influential and famous composers of all time.

Beethoven is also acknowledged as one of the giants in classical music and he is occasionally referred to as one the Three Great B’s (the other two are J.S. Bach and Johannes Brahms). He composed in several musical genres and for variety of instrument combinations. His works for symphony orchestra include nine symphonies and about a dozen pieces of “occasional” music. He wrote seven concerti for soloists and orchestra and one opera “Fidelio” and two masses.   He wrote 32 piano sonatas and numerous shorter pieces and 10 violin sonatas, 5 cello sonatas, a sonata for French horn and numerous lieder, all accompanied by piano.  Beethoven wrote a significant quantity of chamber music for various combinations of wind and string instruments.

“Romancing Beethoven” features chamber music in Beethoven’s uniquely romantic style. The Cordia String Quartet will be performing “Romance in F major Op.50”, “Romance in G major Op.40”, ”12 German Dances Op. 8” and “Quartet in C minor Op.18”.  The selected repertoire showcases some of Beethoven’s light and sparkling music evoking a romantic and effervescent atmosphere.

The Cordia String Quartet’s members are all excellent musicians, namely Jacob Portelli (viola), Frank Camilleri (cello) , Emese Toth and David Lang (violins). They all possess extensive performance experience as part of the string quartet and also as soloists or in other musical formations.

The concert is going to be held at the Palazzo de Piro Cultural Centre which will be organized by Barocco Cultural Events.  The restored nobleman’s house which has been opened as a cultural centre is the venue for major exhibitions and premier national artistic and heritage events and exhibitions.
